Mu Olokukurtilisop
Deep in the sacred caves of the mountain Tarcarcuna, overlooking the deep waters of the Gulf of Darien, the spirit of the Goddess Mu, Giant Blue Butterfly Lady, still lingers lovingly, protecting the women of the Cuna tribe.
In the days before the world began, Mu gave birth to the sun and taking Her sun as Her lover, She gave birth to the moon. Mating with her grandson Moon, She brought forth the stars, so many that they filled the heavens. Then mating with the stars, the sacred womb of Mu once again stirred with life so that in this way She brought forth all the animals and plants. It is for this reason that Cuna people remember that Mu Olokukurtilisop gave birth to the universe- created all that exists.
The first Cuna people made their homes in the caves of Tarcarcna but even when they wandered as far as the Chucunaque River, still they brought their dead back to the caves of the mountain, there to rest in the womb of Mother Mu, the protective womb from whence all people came. Close to the caves of Tarcarcuna, stands the sacred grove of saptur, trees whose fruit contains the juice of the menstrual blood of Mu. And close to the grove is the sacred hut of the Inna, the shrine of female puberty that each young woman enters at the time of her new womanhood, the time she celebrates the ceremonies of the Inna. On the ground near the Inna shrine, the young one lies being as one with the earth, as the older women toss the sacred soil upon her. Gathering in a circle about her, they sit on the benches to form the Ring of Protection, smoke rising from their pipes as incense invoking the spirit of Mu. Then removing the covering of earth, the women take the young one and paint the red juice of the saptur, the menstrual blood of Mu, upon her face- chanting their blessings on her life, honoring her with the dance of new womanhood.
Into the sacred Inna shrine, the young woman is escorted and there the black ribbons of her hair fall upon the earth, as her childhood falls from her in the woman shrine that no man has ever entered, the holy place of Mother Mu. Emerging from the Inna shrine as a full grown woman, her golden brown face glowing with red saptur is now framed within her small black satin cap of woman hair- as she awaits the time of the omens.
One sacred saptur tree is felled b the women as a gift of Mu to the initiate. Carefully studying the cross grain of the tree, the women read each and every line, foretelling the events of the new woman’s life. Only now that the woman blood has begun to flow, only now that she is one with the earth, only now that the menstrual blood of Mu has brightened her face, only now that her head is free from the weight of the hair of her childhood- is the young woman dedicated to the Goddess Mu Olokukurtilisop, brought into the sacred fold of womanhood and provided with her secret Cuna name that she will tell no others to the end of her days on earth.
